After years of COVID-related delays, St. Albans Under the Stars (SUTS) has returned!
SUTS was set up at the colloquially termed location known as The Triangle, a spot in Archie Spigner Park in Jamaica, Queens next to the playground. On the third Saturday in July every year, Black Spectrum Theater sets up a large stage for a show consisting of live Jazz and R&B, also close to the playground.
Members of the Amateur Astronomers Association (AAA) joined SUTS in teaching a diverse group about various science concepts. Various displays of Skittles and M&Ms demonstrated the elemental makeup of celestial bodies like the sun, a comet, and the human body. A guitar with certain elements marked on its strings was used to teach about string theory. Paper plates, glue sticks, and green and blue paper were tools set out for younger attendees to create their own map of the world.
Those who participated were able to take bookmarks, mini-telescopes, and other materials as a reminder of their ongoing ability to participate in science.
SUTS and AAA came prepared to view the sky, but an overcast afternoon and rain prevented their telescopes from viewing the sun and certain visible planets.
New York State Senator Leroy Comrie of District 14 attended to show support for both the arts and education.
SUTS looks forward to more opportunities to be involved in the local community!
